Case Study

The Vertiv / Liebert DSE equipment incorporates cutting-edge free cooling CRAC technology utilizing R410a refrigerant, capable of seamlessly transitioning to economization through the innovative Econo Phase technology.


Tier 5 assumed full mechanical responsibilities for the project, covering plumbing, clean agent fire suppression, HVAC/Refrigeration, DDC controls, as well as load bank testing of the DC power plant and cooling systems.

The Challenge

This was the most extensive project Tier 5 had ever tackled at that time. We managed the complete mechanical scope, covering Plumbing, Sheet Metal, Fire Suppression, DDC Controls, and HVAC/Refrigeration. As a retrofit endeavor, we faced the challenge of maneuvering large and heavy equipment into the building and onto custom 46-inch-tall stands. BIM 360 modeling was instrumental in the project, aiding in clash detection during the planning phase.

What We Did

We faced the challenges head-on with optimism and leveraged our expertise to swiftly resolve them. Given the project's tight deadlines, incorporating additional trades services posed a logistical hurdle as it impacted our equipment maneuvering methods. The client sought validation of the data center's power plant and cooling systems' functionality to guarantee their capacity to manage the prescribed loads. Tier 5 coordinated and executed a comprehensive load bank test on the power plant and concurrently assessed the cooling systems, ensuring their operational readiness.

What We Achieved

Tier 5 successfully implemented 3 Vertiv DSE cooling systems, along with all necessary services, for the primary data center. In addition, we designed mechanical systems for various facilities including the power plant, washrooms, lunchrooms, storage areas, and roof. By conducting load bank testing, we verified that the system operates efficiently at full load capacities. The Vertiv DSE cooling systems effectively conditioned the space at full load while in economization mode, even at an outdoor air temperature of 9°C.
