Tier 5 completed the installation of six 30kw in-row air cooled DX systems as part of a retrofit project, providing the customer with the capability to deploy high-density hardware efficiently. Our scope of work encompassed the full range of mechanical responsibilities, including refrigeration, controls, equipment placement, seismic considerations, and comprehensive close-out documentation to ensure the successful completion of the project.

The Challenge


Undertaking retrofit projects for a telecommunications client poses a significant challenge due to the necessity of working in a live environment that caters to a large number of customers, where any disruptions to the service incur high costs.

What We Did


Through meticulous planning and the development of precise installation methods and procedures, we successfully installed the equipment at the telecommunication site without any damage or disruption. Safely and effectively routing and braising the refrigerant line sets around cabling through various floor and ceiling spaces was a key achievement. Moreover, navigating these refrigerant lines through occupied zones necessitated the use of a specialized fire wrap to encase the piping, complete with a built-in vent. This feature ensured that in the event of a refrigerant leak, it would be safely vented outdoors.

What We Achieved

Before the customer could introduce the IT load, Tier 5 ensured that the equipment was fully commissioned and tested. AC load banks were utilized to assess the KW cooling capacity of the new In-Row coolers, successfully passing a rigorous 100% load test. Additionally, all outdoor insulation was aluminum-clad to safeguard against UV and animal damage. This meticulous approach resulted in a product that both Tier 5 and the customer are highly satisfied with.
